Pica Eating Disorder is Not About Food

Those Struggling Eat Baking Soda, Paper, Glue, Chalk and Dirt.

Pica eating disorder is not about food, but about eating things like baking soda, paper, glue, chalk and dirt.

Pica eating disorder is defined as a compulsive craving for eating, chewing or licking non-food items or food containing no nutrition.

It is fairly common in pregnant women, whose symptoms usually disappear after the birth of the child or those experiencing high levels of stress, especially when dieting and not consuming enough nutrition. The name Pica comes from the Latin word for "magpie," which is a bird that's known for eating anything and everything.

Sometimes the behaviour is linked to certain mineral deficiencies, such as iron or zinc, which the body craves from other sources. The disorder is also linked to people who have psychiatric disturbances such as hysteria, people with developmental disabilities or similar impairments, people whose family or ethnic customs include eating certain non-food substances, families with a history of this behaviour, people who live in atmospheres of little support and love or who come from a poor family, and people who diet, become hungry and then try to disregard their appetite by eating low-calorie and non-food substances.

Children can develop Pica, statistically 10-20% before adulthood, but almost all of them outgrow it. They sometimes imitate household pets like cats and dogs, who chew on all sorts of domestic objects. It can be fairly harmless unless the craved substances are toxic or contaminated, which can cause intestinal infections and parasites, malnutrition, poisoning, abdominal pains and dental injury. It is, therefore, necessary to seek a medical evaluation to be diagnosed and treated promptly.

Some substances that people with Pica commonly crave are:

  • chalk
  • dirt or clay
  • plaster
  • paint chips
  • baking soda
  • corn or laundry starch
  • glue
  • rust
  • ice
  • coffee grounds
  • cigarette ashes or burnt match heads

I feel like i am going crazy, i cannot stop eating cigarrette butts. It has been going on for years. Of course I know the health risks it is a horrible compulsion that I cannot seem to stop. I would like to talk to some one else with this problem. I really am a pretty normal appearing person, hold a good job, have a great family. What is wrong with me??????????

Lori Henry :
To start with, NOTHING is wrong with you! Although eating cigarette butts may not be very common behavior, that does not mean that many others have the same issue.

Have you ever spoken to a professional about this? Perhaps they could help you to figure out why you are behaving this way and, therefore, decrease it.

Finding someone who specializes in eating disorders is ideal, as they have probably dealt with Pica-like symptoms before. Let me know how it goes.

Can eating cornstarch be harmful to you, even if you don't comsume alot? Also, I have a craving for powdery substances, but I don't think it's because I have a vitamin deficiency; can I eat something powdery and it not be harmful to me?

Hello, none of you are crazy! I used to eat a pack and a half of cigarette ashes a day. I went to a Hematologist and found out that I was severely anemic. I started getting iron infusions once a month and the Pica went away. Literally, the urge that I could not fight if I tried just slowly started to subside. I even threw away my old cigarette butts I was saving to eat. My iron got low because I missed a few sessions and low and behold next thing you know I'm looking at my cigarette to eat. I started my treatments again and it went away again. I know is some people Pica is a psych issue, but I know SO MANY people who I know are low in iron that have some form of this disease. Please check with a doctor if you are able and have them check you hemoglobin level.

I am just drawing the conclusion that I have got to have a problem. I do not smoke, but I found myself eating a cigarette today. People have always noticed that I consume large amounts of ice. I also, periodically, crave coffee beans and ground coffee, even though I am not a real coffee drinker. There are other things like Listerine and Hall's regular cough drops. Really anything with menthol and eucalyptus. I have suffered from severely low iron in the past, but would that trigger such a brosd range of cravings? These items do not seem to have any connection.

Um, well... since I've been about 4 years old I've always had this infatuation with powdered laundry detergent. I want to eat it all the time, I even run my fingers through it. I get all shivery and excited because to me the texture is just amazing. I eat cornstarch, flour, and I constantly get cravings for ash, chalk powder, and fine sand, especially if the sand looks hot! I usually don't go telling people but my mom has told me that I probably have Pica... so I'm guessing that's why I do this.

I've struggled with the shame of Pica for many years. It started when I'd go to the basement of my workplace, it had a musty smell that I liked and one day I was overcome by the desire to eat the finishing cement from the walls. I ate the finishing cement off the walls, and would find any excuse to go downstairs to do this. Then I started mixing cement at home. As you might imagine this caused some very painful problems so I stopped, but the desire has never gone away. I like to eat ice, snow, cigarette ash, kaolin clay. It's shameful, and I feel crazy for doing it, but I cant seem to stop myself. I've gone to 2 family physicians and admitted my problem, but they either didnt believe me or didnt know what to do, so they both just ignored it. I discovered I'm anemic, but Iron supplements make me ill. Funny eh? I'm fine with ash and dirt, but iron supplements make me ill! I frequently try to stop, and I'll be successful for a few days or even a couple weeks, but then I just have to eat some clay! I'm normal in every other way...but I'd be mortified if people found out.

I am a person who knows what you are going through. I have been eating cigarette ashes for over 14plus years. It do seems like you can't stop. I even ask my doctor about it and she have no clue to what the problem is. All I can say is pray and when I found out more we both can help each other. But, I want you to know you are not alone. There's others that just don't want to admit there problem.

Hello There, Is This What It Really Is??? Ive do feel mad, I have eaten washing powder for 3 years now, it started by craving the smell when I was pregnant and I'd pour cup fulls into the box and smell it on the way passed my nose, Then I wanted to smell it longer so I'd wash (smother) my hands with it,(even after I had my child, I still craved it) then it got worse, when the washing powder was wet, I didn't want to waste it so I'd scrape it into another laundry powder cup and lick tiny bits. Then it got worst again Once it was in the cup I'd hide it away, wait until it was quite a solid rock then crush it into little chunks and eat them, It got to the point where'd I'd have a cup full of dry powder and a cup full of damp powder, my refill... I'd eat at least a laundry cup full of powder a week... I really indeed thought I was mad but some how convinced myself I needed it for the sodium or salt??? I don't know why, I don't know why I ate it either, This Was Until; My Lungs Collapsed!!! Indeed!!! I had cysts on both of my lungs and now have asthma, where None of these are common in my back ground, neither is munching on washing powder, I know... But that's what you get aye... So Be Careful what you munch on.... PS: I'm still craving the washing powder (SURF-TROPICAL,Mmmm.Damn It) but I know its not worth lung surgery again... Xx PPS: I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHY I DID THIS... I do have Anemia!!!

Just add me to the list, I found out about pica maybe 10 yaers ago from a doctor but like everyone else has said no cure.
My craving has been for cig ashes, but as I did a invintory of my pastI see where its presents has been all my life.At about 8 to ten it was nestle quick the grainy texure, folgers instant coffee at age 11,fourteen was crushed ice, then pot ashes out of the pipe,no longer use street drugs sober ten years but I smoke about a pack a day and eat the ashes too they are better if hard and crunchy, the staller the cig the better,I find myself hiding ash trays waiting for every one one to go to bed so I can eat alone it is obssesive once I start I need to countinue.I get very pertective over my ash trays no one can put anything in them.I have related my feeling and actions to that of a active drug addict,I save the cig butts to reroll for they perduce a cruncher ash,in the car I will drive around the long way to countine to partake ,it taks time away from my children,I become self center and unavailable to them in a way if they need me at night i will direct them to go back to bed if they want to spend time with me I will tell them no this is my time or turn off the lights and hudle in the corner of the couch while we watch a movie with a coushion separating me from their full veiw my children are 8 an 10 the amazing thing is right now I havnt eaten any the hole time I have been typing but my mind says its tempoary I get to it in a minute .
I do want to share also that I had iron fuion at one time and the cravings went away no thought about doing it any more, I also have no idea what the damage it is dong to my body ,my teeth though are starting to wear down and break and are very sharp,It is imbarrasing ,I have had ptsd for many many years and the action is quit satisfing,I smoke to eat them,I have tried to get the chantex for a long time now thinking I will quit smoking this will help, medicade wont give it to me I'm 37 this habit and all the disfuntions and hiding carring the ash trays etc. has been going on now for @19 years.

hi, i'm not sure if i have Pica or anything but i'm 15 almost 16 and i eat toilet paper and paper towels a lot. I have tried to cut down but i seem to find myself always going to get toilet paper and i eat a lot of it like almost a roll a day. i have tried to ease my mom into the fact that i think i have a problem and when i brought up Pica she told me that people with that are mentally ill which kind of made her a person i didn't really want to talk about it with. i dont know who else to turn to so i decided to past a comment looking for help. How do i bring this about to my mom or dad? I dont want them to think i am crazy.

I used to be a serious pican. I ate starch, ice, flour, baby powder. even though I had been diagnosed as having iron defiency anemia and was taking iron pills, i could not resist the draw of starch. i continued to eat it. The anemia got so bad that I had to have two blood transfusions because I only had half the amount of blood that was needed in my body. In 2002 when I went to see my gyn he told me I had large fibroid tumors in my uterus and i would need a hysterectomy. After the surgery he told me the reason why i was so anemic was because the tumors were growing off my blood supply. The cravings disappeared after the surgery and I have been pica free ever since. I started a group on Yahoo called the PICA SUPPORT GROUP.Its purpose is similar to this site, to educate people about pica and to give support and encouragement to people who wish to become pica free. It is possible and I'm not saying you would need surgery. That was just my experience. But sometimes the solution is as easy as taking a pill. But you must talk to your doctor first to make sure of what is causing the pica.If you would like more info on the group or to be sent an invitation to join, please email me at jata2001@yahoo.com.

I stared tearing off jeans and clothes to eat the thread from it. At the age of 16 I satrted eating ice and still havenot stopped but since I've come to college I have another thing i crave .ie. the wool off my quilt. I am anemic and lack iron. What do I do?

Wow there are a lot of us with Pica! I am pregnant with my second child. I have eaten Chalk with both pregnancy's and my dr said that as long as i keep eating other foods its OK. I have ALWAYS craved chalk. There are certain smells that make me crave it more. I first ate chalk when i was in the 1st grade. Then because i was told that it was bad i didn't do it again for YEARS!!!!!!!! There isn't a cure besides getting the minerals and nutrients that your body is craving some other way. My advice to anyone who is having "unusual" cravings is to talk to your primary care doctor, and if they are CLUELESS, look up pica on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29 take the information that you find there to your doctor and see if there is anyway that they can help you find a substitute for your craving.

I started eating chalk when I was in the 6th Grade and from there I ate cornstarch, Baby Powder, Aspirin and Baking Soda. I stopped taking my iron tablets for a while and one morning I woke up to go to the bathroom and I notice It felt like my brain was frying and I could not stay standing because there was not enough blood going through my body. Of course they had to call the ambulance and they said I was probably dehydrated which was wrong. I went to the doctor and he said I have low blood pressure and I look green. So, the next day had to end up getting a blood transfusion. I notice after I got the blood transfusion the cravings went away. After this incident, I started back taking my iron tablets and then I have slowed up taking them again and the cravings are coming back but, I vow to never eat any of that stuff again. That was the scariest morning of my life.
My Advice... Leave it alone.

My parents are starting to worry because i tend to hid it around the house underneath my bed or under the couch..I plan to see a doctor soon

I never have because it has always just seemed so wierd. I often joke about wanting to eat the sand at the beach when im with my friends but i've never had a serious conversation with someone about it. I do not have a mental disability like the other sites say it comes with. i have been craving sand though for over 3 months....

I can do this for hours without even realising it. Sometimes my scalp bleeds but when I realise what i've been doing I feel satisfied and I stop before feeling a cool tingling on my head, what's happenig to me? This article is very helpful.I used to eat a lot of ice day and night. Also love eating coffee ground and smelling and licking substances such as alcohol, gasoline, pine sol... I knew something was wrong with me. One day I found I had a severe anemia and had a blood transfusion bc my red blood cells were too low. Now I am taking iron pills and have a healthy diet. But I still have cravings for coffee ground. I am still anemic it'll take a while to get back to normal again.

In my family this seems hereditary. Many family members eating specific things, unaware or others. I have an unspecified sensory disorder, & want to chew on plastic or metal. There are safe things that are made to chew that are sturdier, & that won't be accidentally swallowed. I know other cravings w/those I know, have been found to be a deficiency or too much. Paper w/me is a sign of acid reflex, medicine makes the craving go away, often just a matter of finding what's missing or overloaded.

and how the HELL do we all stop?
all of these things are inevitably damaging our health, for me it's washing powder.
is it about will power? it really upsets me, i feel like someone addicted to drugs! is that what this basically is, an addiction? I've been treated for anemia. i've never told anyone about this, i told a friend and she laughed and didn't believe me.
HOW CAN WE ALL STOP SAVOURING THESE THINGS?!!

I'm 22 and I've had pica since I was 8. I started by picking up small pieces of fluff from clothes, then I progressed to soaking cotton wool in ice cold water and sucking it dry. Then I began eating the cotton wool. Now I eat synthetic textiles - anything acrylic/nylon based. It takes me 2 weeks to eat a jumper, 3 days for a thermal sock. I managed to hide it from my parents for a few years, until they noticed the stuffing from the duvets was disappearing, and their clothes had holes in from where I'd ripped the labels out. I was (and still am) very ashamed of this condition. It really upsets my parents as they think it will kill me, so I lie when they ask if I'm still eating.

I'm also a coeliac and my iron is always low. I can't tolerate iron tablets - they give me stomach ache (which is a common problem with the tablets). My doctor gave me iron syrup, so I can take iron in small but frequent doses, but I still hate taking it. My calcium levels are also low. I've had two barium meals to check for any collections of thread, so far so good! I always cut up whatever I eat so the threads don't wind around my digestive system!

I also pick scabs and dry skin and eat it, which really disgusts me, but I can't help it - and I'm a very squeamish, over-the-top about keeping clean person.

I wish I could stop. It does disappear when I have enough iron - the problem is, I can't get enough iron from my diet, so if I stop taking supplements, the urge to eat returns. One doctor told me that there is only a small part of the intestine that absorbs iron, and mine is probably permanently damaged, which is why I keep returning to pica.

In the 14 years I've had this condition, I spent the first 12 not knowing what it was, and thinking I was mentally unstable for having the cravings. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I know it is a direct consequence of mineral deficiencies. It was such a relief to know I was not crazy!

To everyone with this condition, please PLEASE tell your doctor - I had to try at least 3 different ones before I found one who would give me a sensible answer (one doctor told me to 'just stop eating it', another laughed, and a third said I would grow out of it - aged 14!). Pica is not really understood, and the only way for it be understood is if healthcare professionals realise there is a problem!

I am 36 week spregnant & I constantly fantasise about eating dry, fine clay & gravel. Day & night I am thinking about eating it. I get this strong urge to eat mud when I water my garden or when I get the smell of burnt paper/wood. I dont eat the from my flower bed or vegetable patch coz we routinely add fertilizers to it, so I know its not clean. The urge was so strong that I consulted my doc on this to which she doubled my iron supplements. Its not helping very much as I have started to munch on pencil lead (graphite) to satisfy my craving for clay.

I eat 3 or 4 pages of paper nearly every day for 8 years, and i have found that it put me in the hospital over the past weekend it scared me as i realized that i eat pencils and paper to be honest anything that is remotely wood based, i also chew on plastic and metal such as tacks and needles. i now have severe intesinal problems and constant stomcah aches to the point of distraction. now that i know i may have pica i plan to go to the doctor for it as soon as possible, thank you for the information

HI, I HAVE BEEN EATING JOHNSONS BABY POWDER FOR OVER THE PASS 5YRS. AND RECENTLY I HAVE DECIDED TO GIVE IT UP AFTER READING IT CAUSES CANCER IN WOMEN..

I STARTED EATING IT WHEN I WAS 15YRS OLD. BECAUSE ONE DAY, I WAS MAKING UP MY BED USING BABY POWDER ON MY SHEETS(AS MANY OF US DO) AND THE SMELL OF IT MADE ME WANT TO TASTE IT. SO I DID. BUT AT THAT MOMENT IT DIDN'T INSTANTLY FALL IN LOVE WITH IT. IT WAS JUS THE SMELL OF IT I BECAME ADDICTED TO.

THE TASTING OF IT DIDN'T TURN INTO EATING TILL I TURNED 17YRS OLD.
I KEPT MY ADDICTION FROM MY FAMILY. WOULD SNEAK INTO THE BATHROOM AND EAT IT BUT I WASN'T VERY GOOD AT KEEPING IT A SECRET BECAUSE I WOULD POUR IT INTO MY MOUTH AND BLOW IT OUT. TO GET THE SMELL OF IT.

AND MY MOTHER WOULD ALWAYS QUESTION ME. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT BABY POWDER" BUT I KNOW SHE NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD BE EATING IT. SHE WOULD HAVE A FIT IF SHE KNEW THAT'S WHAT I WAS DOING..

ITS GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I STARTED USING THIS PERFUME CALLED "CRUSH" BY CURVE.. IT SMELLS LIKE JOHNSONS BABY POWDER. SO NOW I JUS SPRAY IT WHEN EVER I CRAVE BABY POWDER..

NOW THAT IM 20YRS OLD. I WANT TO STOP!! AND I HAVE FOR A MONTH NOW AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVE CRAVINGS. I PULL THROUGH.

GOING TO THE GROCERY STORE I AVOID WALKING DOWN THE BABY PRODUCT AISLE.

BUT ITS BEEN DAYS WHEN I GO PICK IT UP AND BY THE TIME I GET TO THE CHECK OUT LINE. ILL TAKE IT OUT AND PUT IT BACK. BECAUSE I DON'T NEED IT..

I LET THE URGE CONTROL MY LIFE FOR YEARS!!! BUT NOW I WANT TO BE STRONG ENOUGH TO CONTROL WHAT MY BODY CONSUME..

SO TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAS THE SAME ADDICTION YOU BE STRONG BECAUSE IT HARD TO STOP ONCE YOU GET STARTED..

GOD BLESS YOU ALL..

HELLO EVERYONE

I too have experienced it all from stomachaches on down the line.. Hell I've even shed tears for johnson & johnson baby powder..

But im pushing myself to be strong and not allow my body to b dependant upon it bcuz its not good me. And it took people like you all who has shared your experienced and came out about your addiction to baby powder. Flour. Corn starch. Dirt. Chalk. Sand. Whatever the case maybe.. It takes one to come out about it to open up the eyes of others..

Bcuz just like all of you I was one to wonder if I was alone in this world eating baby powder.. And people telling me that im crazy.. But we're not CRAZY.. There are numbers of reasons to eat it..

I ate it when I was depressed.. It took my mind off of things. I ate it when I woke up in the middle of the night.. And you knw what? It put me back to sleep. I ate it before I ate. After I ate. And sometimes while I ate.. The taste is explainable. But it taste soo good.. SMELLS good.. I loved it for years.. But it got to the point where it became my only vice...

It was like I couldn't function without it. I carried it n my purse. I would fill up ziplock bags and put a spoon inside and hide them all over the house. So that I can jus eat it out the bag when I craved it.. I too used it n the shower.. On the toilet. Cooking. Cleaning. After sex.

It was my drug of choice lol I fiend for it.. Like a crack addict..

But that's my life.. And I hope those of you can look at my experience and say okay she gave it and i hope I can tooo.. Life is too short to just sit around an allow talcum to do harm to our bodies..

If you love yourself as much as I do.. Finish that last bottle and then just give it up..

God bless yu all..

I'm working toward curing my anemia (from very heavy periods), and I'm hoping my pica will go away once my iron levels are normal! The anemia is relatively new, and with it came an overwhelming desire to eat sand and dust. I first realized it while watching a NatGeo special on desert climates and thinking "yum! sand!!!" Shocked me, to say the least.

I knew sand-like things that would satisfy my cravings would be hard to find but had to find SOMETHING before I gave in...was so scared of what actual sand could do to my digestion. Wanted to share something that works for me: Gerber's single grain baby oatmeal in the box, eaten dry. I eat it by the spoonful! It's got this wonderful crunchy, arid, flaky-powdery dryness that tastes like you just took a great big bite of the Sahara! I always breathe in through my nose as I chew, has this great bland smell too that I can't explain but that is so satisfying. And once you chew for a bit it tastes like a mix of paper and communion wafers -- super bland, starchy, and for me, comforting (went to Catholic schools). The best part about the baby oatmeal is that it's actual food that satisfies my pica. Only 60 calories per 1/4 cup, enriched with vitamins, and gentle enough for baby stomachs. Yes, it's totally embarrassing that I eat it in secret, makes me feel like a drug addict sometimes, but I'm glad that I don't have to worry about what eating sand & dirt will do to my body. I can focus on getting rid of the anemia and hopefully, the pica...

Hope this helps someone out there who's dealing with this.

Wow. I'm 17 and I am so relieved at the number of people on here in the same situation as me! I just decided to google eating paper, kitchen paper, toilet tissue and normal tissues especially, which I've been doing for about a year now. I started because I'm overweight and I heard models did it to keep full, but now I can't stop. My mum knows I do it a little bit, but she has no idea about the extent. I can get through a pack of tissues a day. I'm just glad I'm not the only person.

I went through this during my pregnancy with our 3rd child. It started out as just eating antacid for my horrendous heartburn but it developed into an odd and ultimately dangerous situation. I quickly developed cravings that were so specific that it clearly had more to do with a "pica" compulsion than heartburn.

I was eating up to 3 large bottles of antacid tablets a day. It had to be peppermint, a certain generic store brand (not TUMS!) and I would bang the bottle on the counter before opening it so that the tablets were broken up into powder and small pieces. I craved the "gritty" consistency and would chew the little granules with my front teeth.

It ended up causing major health complications. I had a couple of other issues going on (I've always had kidney problems) and the antacid caused a very dangerous condition called hypercalcemia. I had to be induced a month early, my blood wasn't clotting so I was hemhorraging and needed several blood transfusions and they were afraid that the hypercalcemia would stop my heart. I was in the hospital for a month after the baby was born. They had trouble flushing out my system but the anemia and kidney infection/reduced function were also contributors.

My point is, while sometimes these "cravings" are harmless, there are circumstances where they can be life threatening. If you are going through anything like this, you should certainly discuss it with your physician and BE HONEST about what you are consuming and how much. After the pregnancy, the cravings went away and I haven't had anything like it since. Good luck to all.

When I was taking iron intravenously, the paper cravings stopped. It scares me what is in the paper could eventually kill me. . . anyone know??

I have started when I was 14 years old and now I am 28 and still trying to stop. At 14 I started eating baby powder. Then stopped for a couple of years. Then at age 18 I started eating white all purpose flour(Gold Medal brand tastes the best). I would consume a 5 lb bag of flour in like 3-4 days. I stopped for a while and then July 2009 I started eating raw oats. I now eat the quick minute raw oatmeal and consume a big container in 3 days. I have tried to mask my cravings because I think it is getting out of hand and that I am getting worse. It is to the point where I dont leave the house without a stash in a zip lock bag. I use to be very anemic and would take iron pills. I am no longer anemic and still have this problem. Aside from being anemic, there must be some common link that we all share in this compulsion. Any ideas? P/S June of 2009 I started having epileptic seizures but have no family history of it. I had them for about 1 month then they stopped. Doctor said I was having abnormal activity(electrical storms) in the sensory part of my brain.

Like, I would keep wrinkling the sheets up until all the powder came out and then I would eat the powder, and I still do it. As I'm typing this right now, I'm eating it!! I used to get severe stomach aches if I ate a lot of it, but now I don't and I'm scared that it's really hurting me but I have no low energy or any suspicious symptoms. Help pleeeaaaseee!

I think all of you should be tested for anemia. I like tissue paper. 2py. And the cheap kind. As long as I take my iron pills, I don't crave it. But as soon as my iron gets low, I like to chew on the paper. I like the dryness that it gives me in my mouth. So if you're craving wierd things, just go to the doctor and get your iron tested. More than likely, you're having a vitamin deficiency.

Hello I'm 19 and I started having Pica at 12, I had a really bad case of constipation, where I didn't poop for 2 weeks. But then finally I pushed out so hard I finally got it out. It was extremely painful and while doing so I had to bite on something meaning tissue paper, but I didn't eat it. After that I stopped, but then it reoccured, not sure when but maybe 3 months later. By that time I found out I had iron defiency. I tried to stop but can't longer than 2 months. I chew gum everytime I have these cravings and it works, if I don't do it in a day I feel really proud, but this doesn't last because one day the cravings will be back and I'll want to do it again. When I chew, I chew next to a whole roll now. I even play with it with my tongue as I lick the texture of the tissue into my mouth (for me it lasts longer this way). I don't look at myself in the mirror as I'm doing this because of the shame. This pleasure as I put more in my mouth I close my eyes and take it in and chew for long amounts of time. I can be in the bathroom just chewing for an hour the most. I tell myself I'm done and then grab another and so I'll be there for an hour. Also I have a problem eatting, I don't eat a lot after dealing with weight issues. I eat an okay amount of food some days and then some days just 2 small meals. I don't mean to anymore I just don't feel hungry so I don't eat, or I'm too lazy to cook. I poop fine because I don't swallow the TP I guess, but I do get dizzy spells and feel weak. Even so I exercise a lot because I have to get to places by a bike (no car). I may feel faint because I don't eat enough, or chew too much on the TP? I just hope one day I can overcome this.

I'm 13 and I've had pica for about 6 months. Pica isn't about wanting to lose weight by not wanting to eat - it's the opposite. You feel an actual hunger for the thing - I could actually live off sponge, foam, wool and pumice stone. It's horrible. I have no appetite for real food, and I can't stop! I've been losing weight and I can tell everyone thinks I'm an anorexic. I love food, but I love the nonfoods above more. Pica is an eating disorder almost as serious as anorexia and more people need to know about it.

So nice to know everyone elses stories. I too have this crazy desire to satiate myself by eating non foods. My favorite is dry cotton balls, I am sort of salivating just writing about it! But I have thought that they were not good for my health so I just ate like 1 bag of the cotton balls about a year ago. My normal fix is toilet paper or paper towels. I can just chew on it and feel so good, so relaxed. My husband caught on and he will ask if I need to eat something, as I'm obviously hungry. I have tried again and again to explain to him that I want* to eat that pure flavor, that lack of flavor, of pure unflavored paper. Very strange. When we had a home office I would go though a couple of sheets of plain white paper a day.
My next favorite is to eat dried fingernail polish. I will paint my nails, then let it dry for at least an hour. Then I will carefully scrape it off or bite it off my fingernails to eat it. I love the taste so much! Fingernail polish plus the slight flavor of the nails themselves.. Maybe TMI lol. It is not unusal for me to paint my fingernails like 4 times per day, every day, to do this kind of ritual.
I try to rinse out my mouth as I wonder about how much chemicals are in nailpolish but really do not mind to actually consume the nail polish flecks.
I've been vegetarian for over half my life (veg for 15 years) but my levels were checked even last month and I have such perfect blood levels. I am also great at taking vitamins since I'm veg and also know it could help this darned pica! But I ate strange things before becoming vegetarian and still do it even with vitamins...
Recently, I have wanted to eat ice, not just ice, but ice that smells like a strong refrigerator smell (the chemical smell of the coolant I guess it could be said). I used to scrape off the refrigerator coils in our old fridge like 20 years ago and it was so tasty! Like snow or something growing from the freezer!!!!
I would do about anything for a cup of cold powdery snow right now!!!!!
I am thinking about trying the dry oatmeal or cereals another guest mentioned here...I hope it helps...

I started by just eating the sides of book paper, but then I moved on to eating all of the pages entirely, I even have preferences for what kind of books: first it was old "official SAT guide" paper, then the oldish crunchy orange/brown paperback kinds.... but when I came home for the summer, I couldn't steal anymore from the library and have resorted to eating newspaper. I just found out I'm anemic today, but I've been eating paper since last summer, how long have I been like this?

I am so happy I found this site..I crave ice, chalk, baking soda, sand, but my biggest crave is dry coffee grounds. I began eating roasted coffee beans when i was about 10 in our family's coffee shop, ate them like peanuts. I stopped after a while but when i got pregnant with my last child (now 12) i craved it like air and i began eating the dry coffee ground while i made my boss his pot of coffee in the morning. After she was born i stopped but walking in the supermarket in the coffee section would drive me insane. So a few yrs back after the chocolate covered coffee beans wasn't curving my crave i bought a can of coffee. Now i would litteraly sit there after dinner and eat the grounds with a spoon straight out of the can like it is dessert. I have tried to stop many times, only to be hit with horrible stomach cramps, head aches, loose stool, lack of sleep, fever. Many times i rush to the store and buy a can of coffee and come home and dive in..I feel like a addict. But after i eat the grounds, my head ache and fever goes, my tummy gets settled, no running to the bathroom, i sleep like a baby..I do spend plenty of money on floss (smiles)..Is there something my body needs from the coffee, or is coffee like my drug and I can't live without it???

Wow, I am VERY happy that I came across this. I just read all of the posts and finally feel like I am not alone. I am a 36 year old woman and I have been wondering what is wrong with me. I was originally searching for answers on why I crave eating spices from the jar (ALOT). First it was ground black pepper because I loved biting down on the grittiness (started about 5 years ago), then moved to nutmeg which gave me so many negative effects but yet I still couldn't stop. My tongue would feel 'raw' from eating so much which was painful and made it painful to eat and drink, and it would also make me feel uncomfortably 'high'. I'd sweat and feel horrible and depressed about it, and if I made the mistake of eating too much which was often, it would take days for the 'high' to go away and also the painful ‘raw’ tongue. But I still had such a craving so I had to eat it anyway. One day I was out of nutmeg and feeling panicky so spotted ground cloves in the spice shelf - I tried it for a quick fix and now I'm EXTREMELY hooked on ground cloves. I go through the 2 oz bottle in days. I carry it in my purse at all times. I take it to bed with me, I eat it alllll day every day. I pour it in water at work so I can drink it from a straw without anyone knowing what I'm 'eating'. It doesn’t dissolve - I just suck up the actual cloves and eat it. It just tastes so very good, I can’t explain it! I even take the bottle in the bathroom at work sometimes if the urge is too strong and eat some real quick. I eat it in the morning while getting dressed, etc. It's driving me crazy. It turns my teeth a brown/yellow immediately after eating which is embarrassing but I can’t stop. I try to brush often to remove that color (it comes right off). Up until just recently, I was mixing cloves and nutmeg together to try and cut the strength of the nutmeg and avoid that horrible nutmeg high but now I’m over the nutmeg-which I still can’t believe- and just eat the cloves constantly. (I’m eating it now as I type and have been for several hours already). I also eat the glitter from my lip-gloss CONSTANTLY. I buy lip-gloss specifically for that reason. I put it on and bite my lip a bit so I can get the glitter on my top teeth and then I just grind it down with my bottom teeth. All day long. I can’t help it. I love the gritty feeling. I have really damaged my front teeth from doing this, I have ground them down quite a bit and ruined my veneers, I have ground them down to my teeth underneath and have also cracked fillings and back teeth (from the nutmeg). And now reading all of your comments got me to thinking way back to when I was a child and I just can't believe what I'm remembering now! I used to eat the dry baby food flakes, the kind you are supposed to mix with water to make a cereal. I’d eat it dry, I could easily go through a box in a day or so but would try not to so there would be no question of where it was disappearing to. Then years later when I had my first child I started eating it again when I started buying it for him, but that stopped long ago. I also used to LOVE the taste of aspirin when I was a child and teen. I’d sneak and get them from the medicine cabinet and suck on them. As an adult I also went through a phase of eating tons of ice chips. Cups full. I’d stop in the morning before work and fill up a large slushy cup with ice only. My mouth would be frozen and it was very embarrassing to answer the phone because it’s hard to talk with a frozen tongue! But even with the embarrassment I still ate it non-stop! Here’s my crazy list of things I love or have loved to eat at one point or another in my life and things I love the smell of that give me that same sort of crave/irresistible feeling:
Aspirin, Ice, Loose Green tea/seeds/stems, Ground black pepper, Nutmeg, Ground Cloves, Glitter from lip-gloss, Popcorn seeds or burnt popcorn seeds, salt. Sand looks good to me but I am too much of a germaphobe to eat it.

I also LOVE the smell of Windex and clean with it constantly just so I can smell it. I also spray it on my hands sometimes under running water real quick just for the ‘feel’ since I know I can’t eat it. The smell just drives me crazy. I used to rub laundry powder with water on my hands just for the feel of it because it smelled so good, I love the smell of wite-out correction fluid, ammonia, pine sol, gasoline, paint, liquid/powder acrylic for false nails. And I love brushing my teeth because of the grittiness feeling from the toothpaste. I grind the tiny particles of left over grittiness with my teeth (feels like the same feeling as the glittery lip-gloss.) And reading all the comments about baby powder, baking soda and corn starch, strangely sounds very appealing to me. Ok, sorry for the long post and jumping from subject to subject, I’m just happy to be able to finally share all of this with people who understand! I see all of your comments, but what to do about it?? I really want help but don’t know if a doctor would really take me seriously. I have been told I’m anemic (from heavy periods) and was told to take iron pills but I rarely do. I can’t stand taking pills and ironically, it tastes horrible to me! Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you so much everyone for sharing.

OmG I am so surprised that someone else out there eats bounce sheets! It has to be bounce, downy is ok too, but bounce is the best. I hang one in my room and let it air out for a week so the taste isn't as strong. As it's airing out the smell makes me salivate and sometimes I cant wait so I just suck on it when it's really strong and spit until its not as strong anymore. I rip one sheet into about 20 little squares and suck at least 4 a day, so one sheet is good for one work week and yes, I do do it at work and I feel really ashamed of it. One time my boss asked me what I was eating and I refused to open my mouth. I don't know what I'd do if anyone found out. The texture of the material is heavenly against my tongue, I find that cheap brands don't feel as good. I like to hold the piece in my teeth and just rub/suck on it with my tongue and the burst of delicious laundry scent makes me feel almost high. I can almost create the same sensation if i just twist my tongue and rub it on itself but it's not the same without the laundry taste. I've been sucking on pieces of bounce sheets since I was 11 or 12 and I started it with my bro actually, we both thought that laundry smells so good, we wanted to eat it, so we did. I used to carry a sheet of bounce in my back pocket wherever i went. My bro claims to have stopped a long time ago, but here I am, 32 yrs old and still doing it. I quit for a long time after my boyfriend found a full sheet with a little torn off in my back pocket and was like wtf?? I confessed it to him and then quit, but we broke up 8 yrs later and now I'm back at it. I know it's poison, and I keep getting sick, one thing after another, but I don't want to stop. I never knew this was a condition, just thought it was something weird that I do.

TO EVERYONE WHO IS ASKING WHAT TO DO about wanting to eat paper, cigarettes, etc:

1) Talk to your parents if you're underage;

2) Talk to your doctor.

If you are embarrassed to talk to your parents, talk to your school nurse or school psychologist.

If you are embarrassed to talk to your family doctor, look up your local county's health department for a free clinic.

IT IS CLEAR from these postings that many people craving to eat these things have an iron deficiency (also known as anemia). You could also try to take iron pills to see if it helps reduce the cravings, but be careful not to exceed the dose on the package because it is not good for you to take too much iron. You can buy iron supplements from your local drugstore like Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid in the vitamin section - without a prescription.

You will probably also need to talk to a mental health professional. This does not mean you are crazy or insane. Mental health professionals can help perfectly sane/normal people change behavior that they don't want to continue doing. Again, talk to your school psychologist or call your health insurance provider for a referral to a mental health professional.

If you could have stopped on your own, you would have done it already, right? There is no shame in consulting with professionals.

Good article. I eat wood ash from my log burner. In fact I keep the log burner going even in summer to produce the ash. It is such a pleasure eating it I dont want to stop. Started eating pica when I pregnant - fine dust from the cement when the play room was being built for my kids. Never stopped. and wont unless I find out it is really damaging

I chewed on generic unscented toilet paper from around age 13 to just this year at 39 yrs old. I was so addicted to this habit for those whole 26 years!!! My mom used to always comment about it when I was younger but she never took me to a doctor for it. I only found out a few years ago that it was called Pica. Although, it was extremely hard to stop (even with taking daily iron pills now) I felt that I really needed to stop since I really don't know how it can affect my health long-term. I feel so happy that I have stopped for over 5 months now and I do not plan to start again. But yes, every now and then, I do get a temporary craving for it.

I never knew about Pica until I decided to search the Internet to see if I could find out why I'm so addicted to eating coffee grounds, ice, and sniffing moth balls everyday. I was shocked when I discovered that there is actually a name for this and really surprised when I read how many others have the same cravings and feelings. I have loved the smell of moth balls since I was a kid when my Grandmother had them in her closets. However, I was not addicted the way I am now. I crush them up in socks and sniff away while I'm eating crushed ice. I do this everyday and also eat dry coffee grounds right out of the bag. I don't do these things around others, so when I'm away from home, I feel like I need a serious fix like a person on drugs. Once I broke down while on vacation and ran into a grocery store to get a bag of coffee. I couldn't wait to get to my car to open it and start smelling and eating the grounds. The bright side to all of this is that I get compliments everywhere I go on my great body. I work out and my Pica addictions have helped boost my metabolism and keep my body fat free. Of course I'm not recommending this to anyone. Just my story. Thanks for reading.

I am 45 and for at least 2 months now I have had strange cravings for paper and wood but I have not actually ate anything. I did chew on a piece of 2x4 just to see what it tasted like but I didn't get any pieces off from it. But I also have been craving smells. I thought it was because I have been on a nasal spray to clear up my congestion (I have chronic allergies) and I can smell things easier. I like my liquid Arm and Hammer laundry detergent, my sister in law's dryer sheets (I babysit there) the smell of wood (more than I used to), and a few other things. I have not ate toilet paper but I put some in my mouth once and it made my teeth slide together and it was creepy so I didn't like it, but I like to smell it since I can detect a faint paper odor. I have also had strange cravings to put acorns in my mouth or something round and hard that will break when you chew them. I like to walk on our gravel driveway lately. I have really been addicted to books. I smell them (I hate the musty ones though) and slide my fingers across the pages and flip through with the ziiiip noise. I have rubbed the pages on my face. My books are getting all beat up. A few weeks ago I went to the doctor to get checked up on my diabetes and blood pressure and told the doctor I was having restless legs (that's when I got the nasal spray but I think most of the problems started before then) and he didn't want to put me on any more meds so he had me checked for thyroid deficiency and anemia. I didn't hear anything and then I got a phone message that said to make a doctor appointment. I was worried but truly thought I had a thyroid problem because I am always tired and have dry skin and am overweight. That was 4 days ago and then I finally got a letter from my doctor's assistant that said my hemoglobin is low. It was not the usual lab test findings type of letter that we get and I was scared again (I do have depression and anxiety too, man, I'm a mess) because I didn't know what it meant and my dad died from leukemia, so even though I have studied up on anemia now, I am still scared I have leukemia. I do not feel any worse than usual and not like my dad was when he found out he had it so I am praying it is simple anemia. I am even surprised I have it since nobody else in my family has it and I feel I eat pretty well. Just another thing to go wrong with me.

ive been eating baking powder since i was a small child. i dont know how or when i started eating it, but i do know that i use to get in trouble for doing so. i would especially get in trouble when it came time to make cornbread and there would be no baking powder. it has to be clabber girl brand, the other kinds are disgusting. i dont know if i have pica or not but i crave it and the more i have the more i will eat. i will also eat shower to shower if i dont have any baking powder. ive read alot of these comments and i am suprised to see no one else eats baking powder. i am also suprised by some of the things people eat.

Whats the reason you guys do it? I mean, if dog crap tasted like ice cream, i still would NOT eat it cause i know it will make me sick. I love ice cream but I dont love it THAT much.

So even if you need iron, why would you eat something made of metal? Do you wish to die?

Is it a case of ocd where you think something bad will happen if you dont do it? I could understand that. But if its just about loving the taste of something, youre a moron.

So please explain this to me.

This helps. For years, I've had a strong urge to smell washing powder made with baking soda. But I've been a vegetarian for the past year, and I've found that now I have a strong urge to open a box of baking soda and swish it around my mouth several times a day (5 or 6). I am afraid that my blood pressure is increasing as I do this. I don't swallow it, I spit it out. I like the texture of it.

About five or so years ago, I received a bath set as a gift which included pumice stone. I have absolutely no idea why I though about it all the time and craved it, having never eaten it before. Well one day I took a small bite and loved it. I would buy these 97 cent ones at walmart all the time and eat probably 4 a week or so for months. During this time I was very anemic, once my iron was under control I was fine and never craved it again . I thought back on eating it and it grossed me out. Well recently I have been craving them hard core. I took a bite of one the other day and will likely be buying more soon. I did recently go to the doctor and learn that once again, I'm anemic. I crave dirt and sand but have never eaten either; I do need to smell dirt pretty often and will do that but I have never put it in my mouth. I like to chew my hair, I do it all the time from the time I get home from work. I don't do it in public so I kind of have control over this, but I think about it all day and sometimes go to the bathroom to be alone and chew my hair. I also eat carrots that I have not washedr, just to get a little tiny bit of dirt in me. I like to smell lots of things like pine sol, laundry detergent, moldy basement, gasoline, but never have I ever wanted to eat anything like that. I'm glad to see others with this strange issue, and to see it connected to anemia.

thank God i found this site. i feel as though i am going crazy as well. i crave, and i mean CRAVE aspirin. i love the taste and texture of it. i chew it and savor it as if it were a piece of chocolate or something. i was hospitalized several times over the past year and have been very sick for the past two years. i was finally diagnosed with a seizure disorder and put on anti-seizure meds, and am feeling much better. however, all i want to eat is aspirin. im trying to stop, but i cant. i have even made my hubby hide the bottle from me (i have to keep it in the house for my heart condition and must have access to it 24-7, so i am truly stuck). i feel like im going crazy when i dont eat it. its like its all i think about. i know i need help to stop this, but i am so embarrassed i dont what to do. if anyone can help please contact me at stoltzpr1@aol.com. thanks so much and i pray for us all! xoxo
p.s. they tested my blood constantly in the hospital, so i would assume something would have shown up if it were serious??

I don't know if I have PICA or not.....

Since I was little I loved eating ice (I still do) and raw spagetti noodles. I've even broken my tooth chewing on a lego. I chew on plastic very often but I don't normally swallow it. I also eat my nails but that's pretty easily controlled.

I don't think either of these were that much of an issue but for a couple years now I've started eating sunflower seed shells. some people say you can eat them but I know that's wrong. Yesterday I went to the bathroom after eating them and I bled more then seeds have ever made me because I was cut so badly. Even when I'm typing this I'm eating the shells. I try to get myself to spit them out but it takes a lot of concentration. If I stop focusing on what I'm doing I start eating them again. And I think all the extra salt is giving me high blood pressure. I almost fainted the other day from play-sparring with my boyfriend and sometimes when I stand too quickly I see white lights in my eyes. A friend of mine with high blood pressure said that was a sign.

I don't know if this is PICA or not but it's still pretty bad. I'm scared I'll have intestinal problems but I can't stop eating them. someone help!

In a way, its kinda great seeing that Im not the only one who suffers from this but in a way its kinda sad to see that so many people are dealing with it. I don't know what to do myself. I've been eating the substance between bricks since I was a child and Im almost 30! I don't know what its called cement or something else but I cant seem to stop! Its caused serious injury to my teeth and I think it may have caused my stomach to enlarge. Most people think Im pregnant when they see me. I've gone to the doctor and when he saw my stomach he thought it was fibroids. I've seen a surgeon and we did a catscan and all that and he determined that the large growth in my abdomen was overgrown fibroids. Im no doctor but I seem to think it may be a bezoar. A bezoar is basically a growth of whatever non-food item that one has been eating that collects over time in the stomach. Most have to be removed surgically but I think there are other non-invasive ways of removal. Anyway, I would like to stop this horrible habit because I think it will kill me one day. Also, I would like to have a family and I don't know if this will hender me from carrying a baby. It is really bad! So bad that even if I see a brick wall I'll start salivating!! I know its weird and probably the most unusual thing that's been posted. If only I could stop...

I understand what many of you are going through. I want to comment on a post to the question as to why "we" crave such strange non-food items mentioned in many of the posts and posed the question as if it was something that "we" choose to do. This is something that you would not understand until you have been affected. To make the analogy or comparison about dog poop that taste like ice cream is not the problem or the proper comparison. You would crave the dog poop because of something in the smell, texture, appearance of the dog poop itself. If you wanted ice cream, then that's what you would crave not dog poop because it taste like ice cream. It is more or less that the body is craving nutrients. All reasonable logic is lost in these cravings because the body is trying to recover what it needs or what it lost. It defies logic to the person that is actually having the craving. The explaination is in many of these post including this one. Many of you have answered your own questions and the solution is right in your post.
I have a baking soda pica. I don't like the idea that I have such a strange addiction that is induced by low iron. Early this year, I went for my physical and bloodwork and the next day I got an alarming call at work to leave and go straight to the emergency room to be admitted for a blood transfusion. I needed 5 units of blood and was severly anemic and required an iron transfusion as well. I was transfused with 4 units of blood, received iron, and discharged home the next day. With that being said, my cravings completely went away for about two months. I tried to put some baking soda in my mouth to see if it still gave the same feelings of satisfaction; but it turned out to be completey and utterly disgusting to me. Now the cravings are creeping back and fast. I don't ingest the baking soda and it's not about ingesting it. I enjoy the texture of substance...the gritty feeling in my mouth and between my teeth when I "chew" it. If its clumpy and hard, that's when I enjoy it the best. Sometime I will put small drops of water into the box and let it get hard so I can enjoy crunching on the hard bits. Once the powdery-but-gritty texture has been manipulated into a paste in my mouth; I spit it out, rinse my mouth, and repeat. I can go through 2-3 lbs of baking soda a day and I keep a box a work where I will take two drinking cups into the bathroom stall; one empty and one filled with water, so that I can indulge in the ritual of "manipulating" the powder into a paste by "chewing" down the baking soda and spitting it out. I've been doing this for the past 2 years now and I am embarrassed by it. I mention this my hematologist but she didn't seem to be alarmed but she did acknowledge that it was a symptom of my anemia. I know what this is now and I know why it's happening. The other concern with the problem is that a "ritual" has been created around the disorder and the ritual becomes a part of the daily routine...a part of "it". Now we have to satisfy the routine of the compulsion. I compare it to a smoker that is trying to quit; not only do they have the addiction to the nicotine, but then there's the addiction to holding the cigarette between the fingers and the whole act of smoking.

I have Pica. I eat wax, rubber bands, wood, paper, plastic and ice almost everyday. I eat wax and paper the most. I have a few times tried other items such as drywall, tree leaves, dirt, clay, Styrofoam and other items. I would estimate that I eat about 2 pounds of wax a month. I just cant get enough. I eat napkins or toilet paper every day also. I have been doing this since I would guess I was 10 and I am now 34. I need to talk to a doctor about this but have always been embarrassed and thought he would think I am some kind of nut job. But since I read this and other articles and know now that I am not the only one with this problem I will have to make an appointment to see if I can find out what is causing my Pica.

I had been eating baking soda from about the age of 11 to about 23. It controlled my life. I would eat a regular sized bx in a bx. And when I say "eat" I actually digested it. I believe this is what caused me to have uncontrollable muscle twitches ALL OVER my body. It's so annoying & sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night. I 've stopped eating baking soda for anout 2 years now and started taking a muti-vitamin daily. I would also eat ice like crazy & my appetite for that has since curved. Now that I am no longer a slave to baking soda, hopefully I can get control of this twitiching b/c I don't want to have to live the rest of my life like this. I read some where that taking Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin supplement will help to get rid of them but I have yet to be able to take the recommend dail dose (3 pills/day) to find out. The vitamins (just as the muti-vitamin) has to be taken w/ food & can really cause a upset stomach if it's not. I hope to one day be able to get rid rid of the twitches & keep the baking soda out of my life. Pray for me.

Recently this year, i started chewing on towels and love the taste of the laundry detergent in it and now its becoming a daily thing. Sometimes I even put a little bit of dirt or sand in it. I really think its a compulsion because I just cant seem to stop. I desperately want to stop but I'm too embarrassed to tell anyone about it and I don't know if I should go to a doctor. I'm really worried that i could be destroying my health if this continues.

Hi,
I am 32 years old and I guess I have been suffering from PICA, since I was about 13 years, As a child I would love to stick my finger in a guniess glass (high iron content bitter) and eat the frooth, this then changed to include cigarette ashes, this I have been doing the longest, still to date. I never used to smoke, but I guess for about 5years now I have. I used to love going to the pub with my father, I would scoop up the ash in a napkin and take it home to eat. I have had cleaning jobs and would lick the ash from the ashtrays too. It's like, I smoke to eat the ash and I'm a secret smoker, I smoke outside and when the windblows I get quite annoyed if the ash blows onto the floor. I sometimes paint my fingernails, but i eat the polish off, quite concerning really, a few years back I would by some cheap ground black pepper and would dip whole carrots into it and eat i contstantly, not good for your teeth or gums. I eat baby powder too, the English Johnsons powder is nicer to eat then the Amercian Johnsons, though the Amercian powder smells nicer. Back to ash, The best ash has got to come from cannibas, as its so crunchy, but haven't had this for years. I hate stale ash though especially from roll ups, that is the worse.
Nice to hear there are many others like me out there.
I used to eat paper too, but not lined paper as that is nasty.

I feel the exact same as the rest of you! It all started when i was like a toddler and i loved the smell of washing powder and my mum used to find me scooping the washing powder out of the box and when she put it out of my reach, i would open the washing machine drawer when she had put some washing powder in there and scoop out all of the soapy mush! :/ .. She was telling me about it when i was 13 and ever since, i can't stop munching on the stuff! my addiction has varied over the 4 years i have been addicted because i used to love wetting it and letting it dry in blocks and then swallowing bits whole, I then used to love sifting the hard bits from the washing powder and just eating them and now im more into licking my finger and putting it into the box of washing powder and then eating it off my finger! It feels so wrong but i guess i have pica and i don't know what to do about it!
on a very serious note, i once accidently ate 'vanish oxi action' which isnt washing powder, but it's more or less used for getting staines out of white clothes, but it is shaped exactly like washing powder. Anywho, when i was just eating this powder, thinking it was my normal intake, i suddenly realised that when it came to me needing to swallow the powder, i couldnt! And then i spat it out and realised my throat was swelling up instantly, which obviously panicked me because my breath was becoming shorter and more strained to the point where i couldnt breathe at all! THANKFULLY i had a friend in the next room so she was all prepared to call an ambulance, but got me some water and that managed to do the trick! DONT do it people! it was a near death experience i caused for myself :/

I'm 19 years old and i think i have Pica Syndrome. From the age of 12 I started to eat sponges with washing up liquid. I used to cut up the sponge into tiny pieces and carry it in a bag with me, to school or where ever i was going. I then stopped cutting it and i started to bite it i am still now addicted. it got so bad that i stared to eat the stuffing out of my coats and ate the stuffing out of duvets and pillows. At the moment i don't really eat the sponge but i love the scourers and the scouring pads. during the past month i have eaten 8 pads and the tops of 32 sponges. i dont know what to do .

trust me, everyone here isn't alone. i'm a freshman and since the summer i haven't been able to STOP eating ice and any kind of paper (excluding toilet paper). i don't swallow, i just chew..i've been having REALLY bad stomach problems and i've gotten an ultra sound and blood tests and everything and my doctor is ready to seend me to go get a gastroscopy. i'm extremely nervous to tell him that i chew on paper and ice..and my mom found out and she thinks i'm CRAZY. i put post it notes all over the house and in the freezer saying "danger. pica." but it doesn't work at all! it all started when i was downstairs helping my mom so laundry and she left and i LOVED the smell of the laundry and i always like chewing on like the wet shirts that would come out of the wash..so when she left when everything was hung up, I saw a huge roll of paper towels that looked like it absorbed all the aroma in the air so i was like 'HEY! this is the closest thing next to actually drinking detergent' so i started eating paper towels at first and then i've moved to tissues and paper AND LOTS OF ICE. all my friends are really concerned about me. i never used to burp and now i CAN'T STOP. it's uncontrollable. i get stabbing pains in my upper left abdomin and sometimes in the middle too. i'm taking nexium and gastrovacas because my doctor about a month ago diagnosed me with gastritis..can someone help me and please tell me if my severe stomach pains could be related to all this? and do i have pica? i'm so weird .__. thankyou.

I. Ate dirt when I was pregnant during 2 of the 3. I now am 56 & craving it again. I found out that my body is low with iron. Iam taking iron now. I also found eating crused ice helps not to crave dirt. Nice to know I'm not alone.

Okay, maybe I am the only one? I read through the comments and found no one else who has a craving for soap.
I love the smell of hand/body soap. In fact I actually scrape of tiny bits of bar soap and suck on it sometimes, and if the brand is right it tastes lovely.
One other bath-related addiction is bath salt. Not those odd Ivory Wave things that have been on the news lately, but real honest-to-bejeezus bath salt. There's a particular brand I like, too, and while I used to just sniff the scent, I later went on to letting the bath salt dust fly up my nose because I liked the scent mixed with the tickly-burning feeling of it. Occasionally I eat one of the little beads but then think it tastes a little too weird for me, so I can't take much.
Am I the only soap-eater/bath-salt sniffer?

Oh my gosh, I didn't know that there was a name for this! Ever since I was younger and even now I have a HUGE craving for eating sand (mostly sand), sawdust, chalk, and flour, which I find to be really odd. I used to eat sand a lot as a kid (for some unknown reason) and now I still really want to eat sand and almost anything that's like it. I also used to eat paper when I was younger, but I think I've lost my appetite for paper.

I have no idea why I want to eat sand so much! I don't think there's anything particularly terrible about eating sand, except for the fact that it can erode the enamel on your teeth, and not too long ago (maybe two years ago) I started to crave chalk. What I would really like to do is grind up a stick of chalk and eat the chalk dust. I obviously can't do that now, so instead I just write on a blackboard and erase everything and knock two erasers together. The smell is heavenly.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person that has weird cravings like this. I don't know if I should do anything about my want to eat sand, because I only get to eat it maybe, twice a year, and when I do get it I always boil it and then let the water evaporate from it so it's nice and dry and clean before I eat it.

Guys I have this problem too and I've been looking into making a support group or some sort of online presence. Also, maybe this will push people into researchingPica- the only research is being done on pregnant women and children but what about us?! I'm 28 and I've been going crazy with this. I eat chalk, plasterboard and soil and have done since I was 16.

Please get in touch if you want to talk and share your experiences, maybe we can help each other out!!!- stevie.martin12[at]gmail.com

I have the same problem... I thought it was just me though till I did some research on it recently. I can't go a day without chewing on washing powder and recently it's becoming more consistent - morning, afternoon and evening (before I go to sleep) since I finished college. I chew the blue bits in the Daz hand-washing powder and spit them out. I don't know what it is, but the crunchy blue bits are what I crave the most, (Just typing about it makes my mouth water). I've tried to go without it, and get my mum to buy different washing powders, but I have this sudden urge to try the ones she buys even if I don't like the taste... I'm really worried for the consequences, though I make sure that I wash my mouth thoroughly so I don't ingest any particles. This has been going on for too long, and it's always done in secret... None of my family know about it :S

Hi Everyone,
I also have an issue too with eating things with no nutrition. I eat clothing material, i have eaten countless bath towels, t-shirts and linen pillows. It started i think when i was about 13 (im now 27) i used to make clothes for my barbies out of my old clothes. Then on day i just put a piece of material in my mouth, chewed for a while then swallowed. At this point it wasnt an addition but then i had a friend who used to eat brick, stone, sand or cement, she used to have a shoe box full of it and she used to take a piece and bit into it and you could just hear her crunching away. It was then that my craving for material really took hold and I would eat a whole towel in a few weeks, just tearing away and chewing it for hours. Im not just addicted to eating it, but preparing to eat it, like the tearing sound the material makes as i rip it. I even tried eating the stones that my friend had, at first i didnt like the grit that was left behind in my teeth but i soon got used to it. Then i started to pick at the wall and there was a big massive hole (im talking the length of a radiator) where i had been picking away and eating for months. My mum got the council to come and replaster the wall. How ever there is a small hole i occasionally pick away at behind the radiator. I dont do that as much but if i dont have any material to eat then ill eat that. sometimes i used to combine the two, wet the material in my mouth then roll it in the sandy wall and it would just disintergrate when i eat it. I know i should stop but the craving is so strong, Ive been eating a red t shirt as i write. I really need to stop this and i dont know how. my boyfriend knows i eat this and some of my friends do and they all urge me to stop. The longest i have stopped is about a month but then i go right back to eating it. HELP! what should i do?

I have been chewing a box to 2 boxes a week of baking soda. I am careful not to swallow it, but I put spoonfuls of it in my mouth at a time and then I use it to brush my teeth. My favorite is the store brand at Walgreens. I'm not sure what they do differently, but the texture is what makes it great. I sometimes add water and let rocks of soda form so I can crunch them in my mouth.
I have very heavy periods, so I know that I need iron supplements. I try to to remember to take them. And when I do, I believe the cravings subside. But the baking soda tastes and feels better in my mouth than most anything.

I'll be darned..!!! I am a 29 yr old black female and I have been eating cigarette ashes for about 15 yrs. I thought I was the only person in the world who did this. Well I have a cousin who likes cornstarch and another who likes ice and baking powder but, at least those are food items. I am on some crazy psycho level eating ashes. I hid it for a long time but maybe about seven years ago my cousin walked up on me eating them and was floored and I begged her not to tell anyone. For awhile she did but not too long. All of a sudden most of my immediate family knew. I was soooooo embarassed. Some of them were like eww, thts gross r they would ask me if im crazy and im like no, you guys must be crazy cuz they are soooo good. They have a taste like nothing else in this world. I still have yet to ever let anyone i have been intimate know about it. Maybe if I one day get married i will tell him at the alter right after the i-do's. Seriously tho i need them, i smoke to get them. I hide the ashtrays and i never let anyone put anything in my ashtrays other than ashes. i find myself seeing an ashtray sumwhere, especially if there are a lot of ashes and my mouth will start watering and i just have to figure out a way to get them without someone seeing my. the only thing that will make me not want them is if the tray is dirty and has other stuff in it or if they are wet, other than that im gonna scheme within myself until i can lat them melt on my toungue. my mouth is watering as i type. Someone, anyone, if you can help me cure this please email me at jacksontiff@fastmail.fm. I am in desperate need. I have yet to tell a doctor about my obsession. cigarette, cigar and marijuana ashes only!!!

I am 13 years old, I think I have pica because I eat soap foam, like everyday. I've been doing this for atleast 2 years now I think. I don't get the chance to do this everyday now since my mum caught me. It all started out when I was in the shower, I used to get the soap from my puff and squeeze the foam into my mouth and the spit it back out. Then when I washed dishes, I used to make sure the sink was clean so i could fill up the sink with water and soap and I would eat the foam. After, I got the idea of using an empty water bottle to put a little bit of washing up liquid inside it, and the filling it up halfway with water, and then shaking it to get foam, and eventually eating the foam after and doing the same process with shaking it over and over until the water ran out and i would need to refil it. I haven't heard much people with my crave, but I want to know what soap foam can do to you... Also I hear people with pica have iron deficiency, I dont want that :( please, Im scared and I cant stop

I just googled about pica and found this. I like to eat sand, cement, wooddust, cigarette ashes, chalk, powdery make up.. I'm just wondering what this does to my body..I can't imagine the amount of chemicals I swallow everyday is doing nothing..
