Kate Moss has been in and out of the spotlight over her years as a model, accused of having an eating disorder. The other day she was quoted as saying that one of her mottos is “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” a pro-anorexia slogan that pro-eating disorder websites like to use as “thinspiration.”
Kate was quoted in an interview with the WWDBEAUTY website that spread quickly and ferociously across the internet. Eating disorder awareness groups are up in arms, saying that she has probably caused even more bouts of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating by her one comment; Caprice, a former model, has called Moss “irresponsible.”
A spokesperson for Kate, from her modelling agency Storm, has been quoted as saying that the extract was part of a larger answer and that it has been taken out of context.
The Modelling Career of Kate Moss
When Kate Moss first hit the modelling scene, she was compared to Twiggy for her skinny frame. Not long after followed the accusations that she was anorexic and starved herself in order to be so thin.
In 1997, she published a book that told the story of her life so far in fashion photos, published and unpublished, with the introduction being the only part that she wrote. Her postscript was: “I am just on my way out to dinner, to eat a massive steak and loads of very fattening potatoes, with loads of butter.”
Her defiance of the public’s outcry that she had an eating disorder was something she would blurt out over the years. But her newest comment has pushed the public over the edge.
Kate Moss Influencing Young Girls
A celebrity with so much influence, especially on young girls who aspire to be like her and look like her, should know better. She has spent enough years in the limelight dealing with media pressure and public uproar. Why was she so careless in her choice of words?
The question was simple: WWD asked her, “Do you have a motto?” This is when she replied that there were lots and then used “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” as her example.
Are Pro-Anorexia Comments Acceptable?
Are the eating disorder organizations right, will she cause more people to become anorexic by her comment? Is Caprice right in calling her irresponsible? Or should the public just let her say what she wants to say and stay out of her business?
