Teen Girls on Self Esteem & Positive Body Image

Social Change Happens When Teenagers Deal With Mass Media

When teen girls talk about self esteem and positive body image, social change can happen. The Dressing Room Project deals with mass media with teenagers.

The teen girls powered, positive body image and self esteem heightening mission, called the Dressing Room Project, was initiated in 2000 by the Emerging Women Project (EWP). This non-profit organization for teen girls listened to the females who participated and their anger towards mass media and issues like self esteem and positive body image.

Starting small, they are now joining nationally with thousands of teenagers who take their self esteem and positive body image into their own hands for social change. Participants sign up and receive free cards that they put up in women’s dressing rooms.

The cards have comments on them like, “You’re over flowing with beauty,” “Worry about the size of your heart, not the size of your body,” and “Everyone is beautiful in their own way” to help fight mass media.

These "DRP Action Teams" are:

  • becoming part of this powerful social change movement
  • helping effect a positive shift in cultural attitudes towards beauty
  • receiving valuable prizes

The Dressing Room Project workshops are presented by singer/songwriter Mimi Kates. They are interactive and help teen girls develop self esteem and a positive body image.

Live music is played, group activities done, all as a catalyst to discuss relevant issues that face these young women. Information on eating disorders is also presented. They are encouraged to join the social change movement by participating in the project and creating their own cards.

Projects like this are fast becoming popular with teen girls all over the world. It shows the need to teach young people the importance of making their own choices and forming their own opinions.

As the workshops and organizations become more popular, so will the confidence level and sprit of so many young people.
