Travel luggage can make or break a trip. Ever been travelling with a carry on suitcase that proved more trouble than help? How about a backpack that seemed too bulky to bear putting on?

Below, find reviews of a few travel luggage options from Magellan’s Travel Supplies, all of which have been personally tested for comfort and practicality. They include carry on luggage, checked luggage and laptop backpacks that work well on hiking trips in British Columbia, urban visits to Calgary and overnighters in rural Saskatchewan.

Carry On Luggage

With all of the new travel rules regarding carry on restrictions, having a good piece of luggage can make things so much easier when travelling through Western provinces. The 19” Free Wheeling Upright is a four-wheeled carry on luggage that stands out from the rest. This portable piece is perfect for one or two night stays and fits into the carry on luggage requirements for flights to Western Canada. It’s also large enough to use to replace checked luggage on short trips.

The four wheels take the load off of pulling the small suitcase and make it easier on the body when waiting in lines at the airport. Instead of lugging it or having it fall over, the wheels make it painless to just push along. The only downside: laptops don’t fit in the front pouch and must be packed in the inside compartment.

Laptop Backpacks

Finding the right backpack can be a challenge, depending on what kind of trip is being planned. The DaySafe 100 backpack is a winner for both protection in the Canadian Arctic or city travelling in Winnipeg. This sturdy bag can be used for full-fledged hiking trips or large city travel. The tough material is resistant to thieves with slash proof straps and compartments, a lock and tamper proof zippers.

A major bonus is the detachable section that comes with a lock. This acts as a portable safe, incredibly helpful for keeping valuables safe in rural areas. On top of that, a 12” laptop can fit into the built-in sleeve for big city travel. The only downside (but benefit to some) is the lock: it’s a lock and key, so make sure not to lose the key!

Checked Luggage

Possibly the most important piece of travel luggage is the checked suitcase. The Case Logic 24” Rolling Upright is the top pick. The interior design makes packing for a variety of trips easy. A removable suiter allows dress shirts, pants and dresses to arrive fresh and unwrinkled; a mesh segment is a nice divider for laundry and delicate items.

Another neat attribute is the zipper that expands the entire checked luggage piece 2”. If all of the compartments are irrelevant to a particular trip, just remove the suiter and have a simple space to organize items. The only thing to make this piece of checked luggage perfect would be to have four wheels.

Travelling in Western Canada is easy, but having the best luggage makes it even more enjoyable.
